UBS Strengthens Regional Presence In North East

The hires represent UBS’s commitment to the local market by appointing staff with local connections – reflecting its ambition to be the wealth manager of choice for executives and entrepreneurs in the North East.

UBS Global Wealth Management has appointed Allister Hogg, to join the firm’s Newcastle office as a client advisor.

Additionally, Marcus Stewart, a client advisor at UBS Global Wealth Management in London, has relocated to Newcastle, where he will take on a new role as North East office head, reporting to Debjani Raffan, head of Scotland, Northern Ireland, the North East, and Yorkshire, at UBS Global Wealth Management.

The hires represent UBS’s commitment to the local market by appointing staff with local connections – reflecting its ambition to be the wealth manager of choice for executives and entrepreneurs in the North East.

Hogg has joined from Barclays Wealth Management in Newcastle, where he has spent the last five years as a client advisor advising private clients on all aspects of wealth management. Before starting his career in the wealth management industry, Hogg was a professional rugby player for 16 years, where he spent eight years with Edinburgh Rugby and a further eight years with the Newcastle Falcons – another example of the intersection of wealth management and sport, which encourages strategic thinking. During that time, he also gained 48 Scotland caps.

At UBS, Hogg will advise high net worth and ultra-high net worth clients on all aspects of wealth management and financial planning, focusing on local executives and entrepreneurs.

Alongside his career in wealth management, Hogg is dedicated to his rugby roots. In his spare time, he coaches rugby at Alnwick Rugby Club, is a citing officer for the Rugby Football Union, and is on the rugby judiciary panel for Northumberland Rugby. Hogg is also committed to his local community and serves as a governor at a local First School in Newcastle. He holds a degree in business management with leadership from Northumbria University.

“Both his life and industry experience, as well as his dedication to clients will be a great addition to our business. The Newcastle office already has a strong offering for executives and entrepreneurs regardless of where they are in their journey and we look forward to having him help us continue to expand this offering in such a key market,” Raffan said of Hogg.

Stewart has spent nearly 14 years at UBS. Prior to that, he was a client advisor at Brewin Dolphin in London for nine years. He spent his formative years in the North East and is relocating back to his roots, showing his commitment to the local area. Stewart graduated from Newcastle University with a degree in agricultural business studies and marketing and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (“CFA”) qualification.

“We’re delighted to have Marcus relocate from UBS in London to join us as North East office head in Newcastle,” Raffan said. “His knowledge of the firm, industry, and our client base, make him an excellent addition to the team and I’m looking forward to seeing how he can help to accelerate our ambitions to be the wealth manager of choice for executives and entrepreneurs in the North East.”

This is an example of how UBS, along with a number of other large European banks, are continuing to build on-the-ground networks. Although this idea was challenged during the pandemic, when it was assumed that remote working and using two-way video communication would cut the need for so many offices and locally-situated bankers, the reverse has proved to be the case.
