Citi Names New Global Chief Strategist

Citi Private Bank has appointed Steven Wieting as global chief strategist, reporting to Eduardo Martinez Campos, global head of investments.

In his new role, Wieting will be responsible for formulating investment views and strategies for the business and its clients around the world.

He will also be appointed chair of the global investment committee and joins the investments leadership team.

Wieting is currently managing director and US economist at Citi Research. He joined Smith Barney in 1996 and was appointed lead economist for Citigroup's US institutional equities business in 2000. He also served as economic advisor to the Morgan Stanley Smith Barney Global Investment Committee until early 2013.

"Steven is an economist, investment professional and thought leader of the highest calibre, and we are happy to bring his extensive experience at Citi and elsewhere to this pivotal role. Our clients around the world will benefit from his investment views and strategies on both a macro basis and across asset classes,” said Campos.

The private bank has made other moves to boost its global presence. In February, it brought in Luke Palacio as managing director and regional market manager for the Southeast US region, as the firm also expanded its UHNW Latin American business.

Recent results have been positive. In January, it was reported that private banking revenues at Citigroup rose in the fourth quarter of 2012 by 12 per cent to $578 million ($894.6 million) from a year before.
