Managing Director Leaves Barclays W&IM

A long-serving executive has left the UK-listed bank.

Managing director Julian Cooper has left Barclays Wealth & Investment Management after 23 years.

Cooper joined the bank in 1993, having previously worked at NatWest Markets as head of transaction management. The bank gave no details of a potential replacement for Cooper.

His departure comes as Barclays continues to shrink its global footprint in an effort to cut costs and focus on its domestic UK market. Last week, the bank announced plans to sell around 12.2 per cent of its stake in Barclays Africa. It is also exiting Gibraltar, shutting down its last remaining office in the British Overseas Territory, and selling its Hong Kong and Singapore wealth businesses to OCBC. Late last year, Barclays offloaded its US wealth and investment management franchise to Stifel Financial.

Last month, Barclays reported that its first-quarter profits, attributable to shareholders, fell 7 per cent year-on-year to £433 million ($631 million). Pre-tax profit for the three months ending 31 March fell 25 per cent to £793 million.
