A senior banker in the SME specialist area at one renowned UK private bank goes to another with something of a sporting pedigree of its own.
Matt Wotton (main picture), who was executive director in the sports, media and entertainment segment at Coutts for more than 12 years and who held a similar slot at Barclays, is now at Weatherbys Private Bank.
His role at the UK-based bank, famous for its association with horse racing, is head of sports, media and entertainment.
At Coutts, he served in the role from April 2014 and, prior to this, was head of sports, media and entertainment at Barclays Wealth and Investment Management for almost two-and-a-half years. At HSBC Private Bank, he was associate director at the global sports group.
His appointment comes at a time when, as analysed by this news service, the intersection of sports, banking and wealth management is an important business area. In the entertainment and media fields, meanwhile, the specific needs of clients and their often complex financial lives require specific offerings.
Weatherbys said Wotton’s appointment marks the latest milestone in its “ambitious growth journey,” which has seen almost a dozen new bankers join the business over the past 18 months. Weatherbys also appointed former Investec and Coutts banker Luke Page (pictured below), who joined from Investec as a principal private banker. He worked for 11 years at Coutts and moved to Investec in 2022.

WealthBriefing asked Coutts whether plans are in place to seek a replacement for Wotton. The bank declined to comment.
