Günter Faschang, a fund manager at Vontobel, the Zurich-based private bank, has been voted the best fund manager in the world in two categories by the US rating agency The Ranking Service. Mr Faschang manages Vontobel’s Eastern European Equity fund. The Ranking Service ranks fund managers in relation to fund managers and management teams and does not compare funds with one another, as the more traditional ranking services provided by Morningstar and Lipper. An evaluation uses the performance of all funds managed by the same manager over a five year period. This ensures that funds from different investment classes are also compared with each other. If a fund manager changes his job, the assessment system carries over his track record. The rankings assess more than 3000 fund managers, mostly in the US. Assessments are made in the categories: “Top Ten Overall Fund Managers”; “Top Three Large-Cap Growth Fund Managers”; “Top Three Small-Cap Fund Managers” and “Top Three International Equity Fund Managers”. Mr Faschang came first in the first and last of these categories. The Vontobel eastern European Equity Fund was also given four stars by Morningstar in December 2004. The fund rose 40 per cent in 2004.
