UK Equities Boutique Aims To Raise Sales Run Rate With Hire Of Former County Cricket Captain

A hire by the equity specialist is another case of how prowess on the sporting field can sometimes lead to careers in the very different world of finance.
In a move highlighting how some wealth managers forge links with the world of sport, the UK equity boutique Argonaut Capital has added former Middlesex County Cricket Club captain Ben Hutton to its sales force.
Hutton, a member of a cricketing dynasty including former England legend Sir Len Hutton (who also played for Yorkshire), has previously worked for seven years in an equity sales role at Berenberg, the German bank.
Argonaut is a much more recent creation than Berenberg, having been formed in 2005 by Barry Norris and Oliver Russ. It manages around £1 billion of assets across a mixture of pooled and segregated funds. Its investment process hinges around spotting earnings surprises from firms.
Among other former sportsmen who have gone to work in wealth management are Austin Healey, the ex-England rugby union player; Willie Thomas, a 20-year veteran of financial services now working for Merrill Lynch in the US, who used to be a former Seattle Seahawks football (NFL) player; and Alex Stewart, a brand ambassador at JM Finn & Co since 2011, and a former England test cricketer. By an ironic twist, Middlesex County Cricket Club, Hutton’s old team, is sponsored by Brooks Macdonald, the UK wealth management firm.
