Registered nurse Beck returns to financial service

Ex-Chemical bank credit officer takes circuitous path to BNY Mellon WM team. BNY Mellon Wealth Management recently named registered nurse Julie Beck as head of the private-banking team for its Westport, Conn., office. She reports to Westport-office portfolio management team leader Jeffrey Burns and sales director Chris Borowiec.

Coming to BNY Mellon marks a return to the financial-service arena for Beck, who continues to work at least a weekend a month as an oncology nurse at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Personal skills

Beck joined Chemical Bank (now part of JPMorgan Chase) straight out of undergraduate school at Princeton University. She remained there for 13 years, ultimately serving as a New York-based regional credit deputy with responsibility for a $500-million middle-market loan portfolio.

When she moved from New York to Westport with her family in the mid 1990s, Beck stayed at home with her youngest child for a few years before becoming CFO of Acumen Partners, a Westport-based capital markets intelligence firm founded by her former husband William Beck.

After five or six years with Acumen, Beck went to Yale University's School of Public Health to become a nurse. In the course of qualifying for her new profession, the experience of caring for a family member who was suffering from cancer sparked an abiding interest in oncology.

Beck says her training and experience in the medical profession is an excellent background for working with wealth-management clients. "I never would have thought there would be that much cross-over, but there is," she says. "In a hospital it's really the nurses who manage care for the patients. It gives you a good understanding of how to assess situations and work with people, sometimes at very stressful times in their lives."
