Rathbones Names Co-Investment Chiefs
The move follows Julian Chillingworth's decision to retire early next year after two decades at the investment firm.
Rathbones has appointed internal colleagues Elizabeth Savage and Edward Smith as co-chief investment officers to replace Julian Chillingworth who is retiring. The two will also head a new chief investment office at the firm.
Following a 20-year career at Rathbones, most recently as chief investment officer across the business, and after 40 years in the investment industry, Chillingworth (pictured) has decided to retire, leaving in early 2022.
His responsibilities have been divided into dedicated investment leadership roles for Rathbone Investment Management and Rathbone Unit Trust Management, the firm said on Wednesday.
Savage, who is currently head of research, and Smith, the current head of asset allocation research, will lead a newly-created CIO office, reporting to managing director, Ivo Darnley. The firm indicated that a CIO for Rathbone Unit Trust Management will be announced in due course and that Chillingworth will work closely with all investment teams to ensure a smooth transition.
“There will be many chances to thank Julian over the coming months, but I would like to take this early opportunity to recognise his significant contribution to Rathbones over the past 20 years. During that time, global markets have changed almost beyond recognition, and Julian has played an enormous part in steering us through both calm and turbulent waters. Our warmest wishes go to him for a long and happy retirement,” Rathbones chief executive, Paul Stockton said.
Savage and Smith will assume responsibilities for the day-to-day management of particular areas but will be jointly responsible for the investment process and its delivery, the group said.
Smith joined Rathbones in 2014 from Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management, where he was global strategist and co-lead manager of its Risk Enhanced Multi-Asset Portfolio service. He began his career at BlackRock.
A former hedge fund analyst, Savage joined in 2005 and is a member of Rathbones’ Investment Executive Committee.
