Jacques Darier, a major figure in Swiss private banking, has died at the age of 89. Mr Darier was a descendant of Jean-Louis Darier, who founded a bank that eventually became Darier Hentsch. Mr Darier was the father of Pierre and Bertrand Darier, partners at Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch. Lombard Odier and Darier Hentsch merged in 2002. A famous story often related about Jacques Darier is that whilst visiting his clients in Paris after World War II, he was followed by French taxmen and arrested to compel him to inform on his clients. At the commissariat, rather than betraying his clients, he grabbed and swallowed the paper slip that the police officer had found on him listing their telephone numbers.
