Newsflash: wealthy people like sun, warm weather

OK, no shock there - so now guess what U.S. town has the most millionaires. California and Florida have more millionaire households than other states in the U.S. But the easiest single spot in the country to find a millionaire is a bit farther off the beaten track.

It's Los Alamos, N.M., where nearly 10% of its 8,000 residents fall into the million-in-investable-assets category.

Out there

Following Los Alamos with 9.7% of millionaires compared to the total population, the next top cities are: Naples-Marco Island, Fla. (8.6), Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Conn.(7.2%), Vero Beach, Fla. (7.2%), and San Jose-Sunnyvale, Calif.(6.9%), according to Phoenix Marketing International, a Rhinebeck, N.Y.-based research firm that specializes in affluent and high-net-worth markets.

But if some of these places rank as usual suspects in terms of concentrated wealth, Phoenix notes that there are significant wealth pockets out there, including ones a little off the beaten track. Before Phoenix put a new spotlight on it, Los Alamos was best known as the cradle of the atomic bomb.

"Millionaire households can be found in unexpected places," says David Thompson, head of Phoenix' affluent practice. "In order to reach this group effectively, one may need to use less intuition and more concrete data."

Overall, California has eight "Metropolitan Statistical Areas" in the top 25; Florida has six.

Data from this article are drawn from Phoenix Affluent Marketing Service surveys, which are conducted continuously, and focuses on the distribution of households with at least $1 million in liquid assets. -FWR
