New Resources Fund Launched By Toronto Investment House, Expert

Toronto-based Castor Asset Management Ltd. along with Lawrence Roulston, the mining and natural resources investment manager and pundit, have rolled out the Roulston Resource Opportunities Fund, which is a Caymans-domiciled vehicle.

The fund offers exposure to gold and other metals markets and holds shares in companies in the precious as well as base metals sectors, Castor said in a statement.

"An important objective of the fund will be to capture the gain in value of exploration and development companies in the metals sectors as they evolve toward production. There is a substantial value-added when a metal deposit evolves through resource delineation, engineering, permitting and through to production. The challenge is to identify deposits at an early stage that have the greatest likelihood of successfully evolving," a spokesperson for the fund said.

The launch of the fund comes at a time when commodities such as precious metals continue to attract investors concerned either about whether the global economic recovery can continue and whether inflationary pressures will rise in the wake of ultra-low central bank interest rates. Gold futures have advanced by around 3 per cent since the start of January, and rose by almost a quarter last year. Gold futures for June delivery are trading around $1,12 an ounce on New York’s Comex exchange.

Roulston, a prominent investor in these sectors,  has since 1998 produced a notable investment publication, "Resource Opportunities", focused on the mining industry. Roulston will be primarily responsible for the evaluation and recommendation of the investments in the fund.

Castor Asset Management Ltd. provides the RROF with professional investment management and operational support

The minimum initial investment is C$250,000 (around $249,000).

The surge in gold prices and other select commodities has encouraged a number of firms to launch funds and exchange traded products linked to movements in commodity prices. Examples of firms making recent launches are Swiss & Global Asset Management, Paulson & Co (the hedge fund firm) and Julius Baer.
