Legal & General Crosses The Pond With Latest Offering

The London-listed firm has boosted its cross-jurisdictional insurance capabilities.

UK-based insurer Legal & General has appointed Bernie Hickman as chief executive of its newly-formed UK and US insurance division, Legal & General Insurance.

The firm's investment management subsidiary, Legal & General Investment Management, entered the US with $18 billion in funds in 2005 and that figure has since grown to $133 billion, Legal & General said in a statement.

The new insurance division will provide life insurance, critical illness cover, and income protection to over seven million individuals and company employees throughout both the UK and US.

Hickman previously spent half a decade as managing director of Legal & General's UK protection business and also launched its digital counterpart, OLP Connect.

In 2014, he became chief executive of Legal & General Home Finance and managing director of the group's individual retirement department, where he launched another digital platform for lifetime mortgages.

Additionally, he held the positions of group financial controller and investor relations director.

“Bernie is a proven successful leader,” said Nigel Wilson, the group's chief executive.
