Huge Divorce Payout Ordered On Hedge Fund Tycoon, Philanthropist

In a divorce case that has already prompted commentary among lawyers dealing with ultra high net worth individuals, it was reported yesterday that billionaire hedge fund manager Chris Hohn has been ordered to pay his estranged wife Jamie Cooper-Hohn £337 million ($530 million).

In a divorce case in London that has already prompted commentary among lawyers dealing with ultra high net worth individuals, it was reported yesterday that billionaire hedge fund manager Chris Hohn has been ordered to pay his estranged wife Jamie Cooper-Hohn £337 million ($530 million).

The estranged couple’s Children's Investment Fund Foundation is a high-profile private charity; in the previous decade, Mr Hohn was a frequent and controversial activist investor, wrestling with entities such as ABN AMRO and Deutsche Boerse, among others. The pair have been arguing over a family fortune said to be more than  $1.3 billion.

Cooper-Hohn had sought half the assets. But her former husband, who runs his TCI hedge fund, offered a quarter of that amount, saying he had made a special contribution to their wealth during a 17-year marriage. They have four children, including triplets.

A spokeswoman for Cooper-Hohn was not immediately available for comment. A spokesman for one of Hohn's legal firms could not immediately confirm the settlement, the BBC reported.

Such cases will spark international commentary because the London courts have sometimes been used by non-UK residents for divorce cases, as the jurisdiction is seen as a more liberal one than others, such as Russia.
