HSBC Targets Japan's Mass Affluent

HSBC is to open 30 to 50 branches across Japan to target customers with assets valued at more than JPY10 million ($90,090) for its asset management operations, according to the Nikkei business news. HSBC has been offering private banking services in Japan to individuals with assets of over JPY300 million since 1996. In January it was licensed by Japan's Financial Services Agency to open its first branch in a Tokyo district.
