California HNW Insurer Launches Equine Specialty Practice

Momentous Insurance Brokerage, the California-based insurer specializing in wealthy individuals, has launched a new practice focused on insurance coverage for horse-related businesses and private owners of horses.

The equine specialty practice was unveiled at the start of this year and offers personal equine liability, equine mortality coverage and commercial equine liability, and farm/ranch coverage.

Momentous, which primarily covers high net worth individuals, film and television production houses and music and touring firms, is not new to the specialty insurance practice. Some of its programs include Momentous Restaurants for those in the food industry and Momentous Nightlife for club owners, performers and promoters.

The new unit is led by Terri Peters who oversees all insurance needs for horse owners, trainers and equine-related businesses, while Christina DiSalvo serves as a sales executive. Peters has been in the insurance industry since 1976 and specializes in coaching and training hunt seat equitation and jumpers. DiSalvo used to be a broker for CG DiSalvo Insurance, which also focused on horse-related insurance.

The market for horses is dominated by wealthy individuals, with horseracing often referred to as the "sport of kings." In 2011, prices of yearlings ranged from $4,000 to $310,000 each, according to Awesome Again Racing Corporation, a group that invests in thoroughbred racehorses.
