Battle for Marcos Millions Shifts to Singapore

Nearly 20 years after former Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos was ousted, the legal battle to recover his fortune has shifted to Singapore. At least six parties, including the Philippines government, are staking a claim to the S$37.9 million ($25 million) wired from Switzerland to the Singapore branch of WestLB. In the Court of Appeal yesterday, the Philippines government asked to be protected by state immunity so that it could stop other claims from proceeding. Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong reserved judgment, saying the case was an important one since it involves the sovereign immunity of a state.
