A secret three-year investigation by the Australian Taxation Office has revealed that more than $10 million a day is leaving Australia through the use of offshore credit cards. The investigation has centred on more than 3600 people who are suspected of using 3682 debit and credit cards issued from tax havens to bring money into Australia without paying tax. Such cards are actively marketed on the internet. The investigation is part of a wider tax haven crackdown involving seven countries, targeting both promoters and participants. The information was mainly gathered from banks, credit card companies and insurers. Those under investigation include local employees of multinational companies who are paid through international credit card accounts.
