Australia, Thailand Top HSBC Poll On Quality of Life

Results from the latest
HSBC Bank International poll on the best location for
expatriates revealed that two Asia-Pacific countries made it to
the top three, with Canada taking the lead.
According to the report, Australia and Thailand were voted
second and third respectively for offering an increased quality
of life for expats, as well as welcoming environments that make
it easy for foreigners to fit in. The findings were based on
expat ratings on food, accommodation, entertainment, transport,
household goods, healthcare, education/childcare, working hours,
and others. Singapore came in fourth and Hong Kong tenth.
The results could very well determine the volume of foreign
investment coming into each of these Asian countries,
particularly as investors are not just seeking to find lucrative
business locations, but also promising immigration conditions. In
the report, Asia emerged as the top place to be in for making
friends, with Thailand taking the top spot, followed by Vietnam,
Hong Kong and Malaysia.
Other countries on the top 10 list are South Africa, France, the
US and Spain. The UK scored poorly for quality of life and landed
at the 23rd spot, right after Brazil, Mexico, and China.
“What is clear is that the locations where salaries may not be as
high, such as Canada and Australia, are where expats are really
enjoying not only an increased quality of life but are also
finding it easy to fit in to their new communities," said
Alan Smith, the head of international wealth management for
HSBC Bank International, in a statement.
Asia is home to the highest paid expats in the world, with one in
four earning over $200,000 annually, HSBC said. The wealthiest
expats currently live in Russia, Japan and Qatar.
