Columbia Threadneedle Investments, a global asset management group, has appointed Christopher Mahon as head of dynamic real return, managing the £2.4 billion ($2.96 billion) Threadneedle Dynamic Real Return Fund and other real return strategies.

Mahon will join the asset allocation team this September, having been head of multi-asset at Barings Asset Management where he oversaw more than $5 billion of assets under management, the firm said in a statement. Prior to this, he was head of investment strategy at Rand Merchant Bank (now Momentum Asset Management) and a senior analyst at Coronation Fund Managers. He started his career as a consultant at Oliver Wyman Strategy Consulting.

At Columbia Threadneedle, Mahon will lead and manage the flagship £2.4 billion ($2.96 billion) Threadneedle Dynamic Real Return Fund, where the strategy aims to deliver a real return of UK CPI+4 per cent. He has experience of managing similar unconstrained dynamic asset allocation strategies, the firm added.

The EMEA asset allocation team is led by Paul Niven who was appointed head of asset allocation, EMEA, earlier this month. He joined the firm following the acquisition of BMO GAM (EMEA) last year. Together with BMO GAM (EMEA), Columbia Threadneedle has 23 investment professionals covering multi-asset and asset allocation funds for a wide range of clients in EMEA.

Welcoming Mahon to the firm in London, Niven said: “His investment process and style are similar to that employed within the Dynamic Real Return strategy and I’m confident that under his management the strategy will continue to deliver strong risk adjusted returns for clients.”
