Two Thirds Of World's Richest Self-Made Women Are Chinese

As the latest sign of Asia's burgeoning wealth, The Hurun Report reveals that 66 per cent of the world's richest self-made women are from China.

China’s wealthy women now account for two-thirds of the world’s wealthiest self-made women, according to a new survey from online wealth publication The Hurun Report, cited in The China Daily.

Hurun listed the 50 richest women on the Chinese mainland and the world's 50 richest self-made women, selected from China's Hurun Rich List 2011. But most of these women did not make their fortunes through divorce or inheritance. Thirty-three of the 50 richest Chinese women are self-made billionaires, two thirds of the global total of the 50 richest self-made female billionaires

Just over 15 per cent of China’s 1,000 richest people are women now, while the average wealth of the listed women is 9.7 billion yuan, up 13 per cent on 2010, a record high.

Number one on both lists is Wu Yajun, general director of Longhu Real Estate Development Co, a developer in the southwestern municipality of Chongqing.

Forty seven year-old Wu is the richest Chinese woman with an estimated net worth of 420 billion yuan ($6.6 billion).

The average age of the 50 richest Chinese women is 48, three years younger than the average age of the Hurun Rich List 2011.

Property continues to be the biggest source of wealth for the 50 richest Chinese women, with 18 making their fortunes from real estate, including six among the top 10.

Guangdong province is home to the headquarters of 10 listed women's companies, more than any other region in China, followed by Beijing with nine and Zhejiang with six.

Thirty-three of the 50 richest Chinese women are self-made billionaires, up from last year's 30.

On the list of the world richest self-made women, 18 who have more than $1 billion come from China.
