Standard Chartered Private Bank Continues Asian Recruitment Drive

Standard Chartered Private Bank has continued with its aggressive expansion plans by hiring two Hong Kong-based professionals in senior positions, WealthBriefing can exclusively reveal.

Lawrence Cheung joins as chief operating officer for North Asia from BNP Paribas, the French bank, where he had held the position of COO for five years, rounding out a total of 20 years with BNP. Andrew Lau, meanwhile, has been appointed the new regional head of compliance and joins from JP Morgan, where he held the position of chief of staff and alternative chief executive. He joined JP Morgan in 2000.

Peter Flavel, global head of private banking at Standard Chartered Private Bank, told WealthBriefing: "We are continuing to build the necessary infrastructure and bench strength with senior experienced resources to support our continued growth."

The UK-listed bank, which earns the bulk of its revenues in the Asian region, has been strongly recruiting in the Asia-Pacific region.

Standard Chartered in Singapore is taking on a team of relationship managers from RBS Coutts.

In May, its private bank said it was planning to take on 100 more relationship managers across the globe. It currently has 350 relationship managers globally, and said its recruitment plans were driven by a continuing increase in client demand for its private banking services.

The firm has also recently announced that Marianne Hay, former chief executive of Citi Global Wealth Management, is heading its business in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and North Africa.
