Standard
Chartered has announced the official appointment of Neeraj
Swaroop as chief executive of its bank in Singapore, effective 31
March. He takes over from Ray Ferguson.
Swaroop has worked in the financial services industry for 23
years. Most recently, he served as CEO for ASEAN excluding
Singapore, responsible for StanChart’s franchise and operations
in Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia,
Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Prior to this, Swaroop was the bank’s regional CEO of India and
South Asia for six years. Before joining Standard Chartered,
Swaroop built and led the consumer banking business at HDFC Bank,
the Indian private bank.
As part of a restructuring of its business units, Standard
Chartered created eight specific regions: Greater China, ASEAN,
North East Asia, Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan, Africa,
Europe and the Americas.
“Neeraj’s appointment as the CEO of the Bank in Singapore will
help the local franchise leverage growth opportunities in ASEAN,”
the bank said in a statement.
His predecessor left the UK-listed bank in February to join Arab
Banking Corporation in Bahrain.
“We remain very committed to Singapore, which is an important and
strategic market for Standard Chartered. It is the second largest
contributor to Group (Standard Chartered PLC) income and profits;
it is where our global businesses operate; and the main driver of
income for ASEAN,” Jaspal Bindra, group executive director and
CEO, Asia, Standard Chartered.
