Offshore Law Firm Adds Trio To Mauritius Dispute Resolution Team

This publication brings latest news of moves and appointments in the wealth management industry.

Offshore law firm Appleby has appointed three lawyers to its dispute resolution team in Mauritius.

The lawyers are counsel Yahia Nazroo, who joined on 15 December last year; senior associate Melissa Virahsawmy, who joined on 12 December; and associate Yantee Hurnaurn-Calcutteea, who joined on 7 December.

The team in Mauritius acts on cases and legal issues including commercial litigation, fund disputes, trust litigation, insolvencies and restructurings, regulatory matters, professional negligence and insurance disputes.

Nazroo, who holds an LLM from the University of Leeds, acts for both claimants and defendants in all courts of Mauritius. He has appeared in high-profile cases in the Supreme Court and at the Intermediate Court. He also has an employment and public law practice, which focuses on issues such as unfair dismissal, breach of health and safety laws, matters under the Local Government Act and issues of consumer protection. For the past five years, Nazroo has been very active as secretary to the Bar Council in Mauritius.

Virahsawmy, who earned her LLB from the University of Buckingham in the UK, works in civil law matters including corporate, securitisation, labour, contract, tort, tax, trust, court procedures, divorce and recovery of debt. She also advises boards of directors and works on corporate restructurings, financings and transactions.

Hurnaurn-Calcutteea focuses her practice on civil litigation, corporate law and arbitration. She earned her LLB from the University of Nottingham in the UK.

Appleby’s Mauritius dispute resolution team is expected to continue to grow at the beginning of 2017, with the arrival of two recently qualified lawyers, Karishma Beegoo and Deepti Nawjee. Both have completed their law professional examinations and training and are scheduled to be sworn in before the Supreme Court of Mauritius.

Appleby’s Mauritius office specialises in corporate and commercial work for international clients, as well as advising on corporate administration, trust and funds administration services, and management services.
