New Private Client Partner For UK Law Firm

UK law firm Macfarlanes has appointed four new partners with effect from 1 May 2007, bringing the total number of partners in the firm to 72. Private client specialist Nicholas Harries was called to the Bar in 1995 and practised from 10 Old Square in Lincoln’s Inn until 2001, when he spent two years in the private client tax department at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He joined Macfarlanes’ private client department in 2003 and qualified as a solicitor in 2005. Mr Harries, who advises individuals based in or outside the UK on tax and estate planning, specialises in trusts, including the relevant UK taxation principles (particularly concerning offshore trusts), drafting and technical points of trust law. He is the author of a chapter in Tolley’s Administration of Trusts, the editor of the tax planning chapter of Foster’s Inheritance Tax and a contributor to Simon’s Direct Tax Service. Other new partners are Howard Corney who joined Macfarlanes in 1998 and qualified into the corporate department in 2000, Tom Pedder who joined the property department of Macfarlanes in 2004 and Luke Powell who advises corporates and private equity houses on a broad range of corporate finance transactions.
