HSBC Appoints New Head Of Global Banking For MENAT
The latest moves and appointments at HSBC in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey.
HSBC has
appointed Julian Wentzel as head of global banking
for the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey. He
is succeeding Gareth Thomas who is taking on the new role of
chief risk officer for the MENAT region.
Based in Dubai, he will report to Greg Guyatt, co-CEO of global
banking and markets and to Stephen Moss, CEO of MENAT, the
bank said this week in an internal memo seen by
WealthBriefing.
Subject to regulatory approval, Wentzel will start his new role
from 18 September 2022.
In the new role, he will lead client coverage across MENAT and
oversee the regional product teams, as well as first line risk
management, including credit, reputational, compliance and
financial crime, the bank said. He will also chair the regional
Capital Allocation Committee.
With more than 25 years of banking experience across client
coverage, capital markets and advisory, Wentzel joined HSBC in
2015 in London before relocating to Johannesburg in 2016 to lead
global banking’s Africa business, the bank said. In 2019, he
returned to London as head of global banking UK and international
Europe.
Before joining HSBC in 2015, Wentzel spent 10 years at
Macquarie as head of equities for EMEA, the bank added. Prior to
that, he worked at JPM Cazenove where he held a number of senior
investment banking positions including co-head of equities, South
Africa.
Over the coming months, the bank will also be conducting an
internal and external search in London for a successor to
Wentzel’s previous role as head of global banking for the UK.
