Exclusive: Ex-Morgan Stanley Private Banker Joins Berenberg’s Growing Ranks

Berenberg, the family-owned German private bank, has hired a senior private banker from Morgan Stanley, the third senior appointment in a month for its burgeoning UK team.

Max White joined this week as a director focusing on clients in the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the North West of the UK. He joins Berenberg after eight years at Morgan Stanley, where he worked in the private wealth management division.

White will report to Fred Hervey and Ross Elder, co-founders of the UK division and managers, and Richard Brass, who joined the management team of the 420 year-old private bank last month from Schroders Private Banking, where he was a client director.

Also in July Matthew Stemp joined the London team, in a dual role linking the private bank and Berenberg Asset Management in Hamburg, to develop its presence among UK institutional clients. Stemp previously spent 17 years at UBS Global Asset Management.

Elder told WealthBriefing: "Max brings particular expertise in the areas of wealthy individuals, trusts and family offices, advising on a range of asset classes and strategies.” Elder and Hervey have tried to veer away from the typical private banking reporting model which follows vertical management lines.

"We're trying to install a team-based approach and steer clear of the classic 'sole trader' model. Everyone works together, which we think makes a better experience for the client and the manager," he said.

Berenberg was launched in the City earlier this year by former Barclays Wealth directors Elder and Ross. The parent bank started in Hamburg 420 years ago and has over €25 billion (about $36 billion) in assets under management. Several members of the original family are employed by the bank today.
