Ex-UBS Man Joins New Philanthropy Capital as Director

Former UBS co-head of equities James Garvin has signed up as director of advisory services for New Philanthropy Capital. NPC is a UK-based research organisation which advises wealthy people on how to make the most effective charitable investments. Mr Garvin was co-head of equity capital and prior to that he worked for SG Warburg. He is the latest senior wealth manager to move into philanthropic work. In April Stanley Fink stepped down as chief executive of the hedge fund specialist Man Group to concentrate on charitable work. NPC was set up in 2001 by a group of former partners from Goldman Sachs. It analyses the performance of different charities and measures the impact of donations made to them. NPC’s group of 20 analysts advise clients on where their money will be used most effectively. Philanthropic research is a highly competitive business. The Institute for Philanthropy, based in the UK, and the international company Geneva Global, located in the US, are its direct competitors.
