Commerzbank Appoints Senior China Economist

The latest moves and appointments in Asia at German bank Commerzbank.

Commerzbank has announced the appointment of Dr Tommy Wu as a senior China economist, underscoring the firm's commitment to Asia. 

Dr Wu, who joined the bank in in the last quarter of 2022, is based in Singapore. He reports globally to Dr Joerg Kraemer, a chief economist, and regionally to Nick Johnston, regional board member Asia.

Wu started his career as an economist at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, covering China and Asia Pacific, the firm said in a statement. He joined Oxford Economics in 2017 and was appointed as lead economist in 2020 where he led a team covering China and Asia-Pacific macroeconomic research.

Kraemer said: “We are pleased to welcome someone with Dr Wu’s calibre to Commerzbank and our research team. His academic credentials and experience will further strengthen our research capabilities. I look forward to working with him and providing our clients with in-depth, expert insights into China.”

Johnston added: “Tommy’s appointment underscores our commitment to Asia, in particular China, which remains a strategic market for the bank. His deep understanding of geopolitics and economics will complement our existing research coverage and ability to provide best-in-class research for corporate and institutional clients in the region.”

Its two business segments – private and small-business customers and corporate clients – offer a portfolio of financial services.  It transacts around 30 per cent of Germany’s foreign trade and is present internationally in almost 40 countries in the corporate clients’ business. Commerzbank focuses on the German Mittelstand, large corporates, and institutional clients.
