Brown Shipley Names New Chair

The UK wealth manager has named a UBS and StanChart veteran to help steer future growth.

Quintet Private Bank-owned Brown Shipley has appointed UBS veteran Kath Cates to chair its board of directors, subject to regulatory approval.

She replaces Quintet chair Rory Tapner, who has been interim chair at Brown Shipley for the last six months. The group said she will be advising on "strategic growth” as Brown Shipley continues to align with its pan-European parent.

Cates (pictured) has served on the boards of several financial services companies, including Brewin Dolphin. She also sits on boards at Columbia Threadneedle Group; wholesale intermediaries firm TP ICAP; Northwest water utility United Utilities Group and, until recently, the Royal Society of Arts.

She spent the bulk of her executive career at UBS, where she was global head of compliance and general counsel. Cates also sat on the Swiss firm's global investment bank board, and went on to become global COO of the wholesale bank at Standard Chartered.

“Kath has exceptional experience, particularly within banking and wealth management. Her understanding of the market and opportunities, alongside her combined expertise in risk management, governance and business transformation will be a major asset to Brown Shipley,” CEO Alan Mathewson said.
