BBVA Compass Names Head Of New Wealth, Retail Banking Group

BBVA Compass has named William Helms, who previously led the firm’s wealth management business, as vice chairman of the board of directors.

Helms previously oversaw BBVA Compass’ private banking, asset management, international wealth management, broker-dealer activities and registered investment advisors.

Jeff Talpas, a member of the bank's management committee who has overseen the retail line of business, will lead the newly-combined wealth and retail banking group.

Talpas has over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry, having joined Compass Bank in 2003. He also once served as co-president of Bank of America's private bank.

Helms has also joined the board of BBVA Compass Bancshares, the firm's Spain-based holding company. Additionally, he will oversee the bank's national and local advisory boards, and take part in government relations efforts.

Last week, BBVA Compass hired Mark Chiappara as a senior private banker within its US private wealth management unit.

The firm has 688 branches across the Sunbelt states including Texas, Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Colorado and New Mexico.
