Private Investment Needed In Water Sector - Pictet

Pictet Asset Management reports that, in order to
safeguard water resources for a growing population, the world needs to invest
$1 trillion a year until 2030. The firm says that much of the industry’s
expansion should come through the private sector and this means that the water
services sector can be expected to sustain its strong rate of growth, currently
running at 6 per cent a year.
Private companies currently account for just 8 per
cent of the global water services market, but this figure is expected to rise
to 21 per cent over the next decade. Two areas where the private sector is already investing
in research and development are water recycling and desalination. Pictet
launched its water fund in 2000 to capitalise on the long-term demand for water.
