Bonhams, the international auctioneer house, has appointed
senior industry figure Jennifer Gibson as head of fine furniture, decorative
arts and Asian Art for its Australian business. Gibson will be based in the new
Melbourne
office at Ormond Hall. Gibson has held the role as head of decorative arts and
senior auctioneer at both an international and Australian auction house for the
past 14 years. Her expertise includes English, Australian and Continental
furniture, ceramics, glass, sculpture and silver coupled with an interest in
Asian works of art including Japanese ceramics and textiles, Bonhams said. Her appointment comes at a time when sales of fine arts in
the Asian region, and involving Asian buyers, have been boosted by the affluence
of this region. In late November, for example, this publication reported that auction
records were broken by Asian and international big spenders at the world’s
biggest auction houses in Hong Kong. For
example, Christie’s saw two world records established at its autumn season,
Asian 20th century and contemporary art sale, held at the Hong Kong Convention
Centre.
