Deutsche Bank has appointed long-standing German diplomat Thomas Matussek as managing director of its Alfred Herrhausen Society, a non-profit organisation focusing on new forms of governance in the 21st century. His appointment is effective from 1 January, when he succeeds Wolfgang Nowak, who retires at the end of 2012.

Matussek, a German foreign diplomat of 36 years' standing, is currently head of public affairs of Deutsche Bank in Berlin having joined Deutsche Bank in November 2011. He has been Germany’s ambassador in London and to the United Nations in New York, as well as in New Delhi. His successor as head of public affairs of Deutsche Bank in Berlin will be announced in due course, the bank said.

A non-profit organisation, the Alfred Herrhausen Society is the international forum of Deutsche Bank, the work of which focuses on new forms of governance as a response to the challenges of the 21st century. Together with its international partners across a range of fields, including public policy, research and business, the society prepares, organises and conducts forums for discussion around the world, forging international networks and establishing temporary institutions to help to find better solutions to global challenges, the bank said.

The organisation takes its name from Alfred Herrhausen, former spokesman of the Deutsche Bank management board, a prominent advocate of the idea of corporate social responsibility until he was assassinated by terrorists in 1989.

As well as its philanthropic contributions, Deutsche Bank is known for its status as one of the largest corporate art foundations, with a famed artistic presence in and across Europe, North America and Australia.

Meanwhile, Ute Weiland will continue in her role as deputy director of the Alfred Herrhausen Society.
