Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Japan's second largest lender, has created a new division to establish better lines of compliance with Europe.

As part of its overseas strategic expansion, SMBC is strengthening its business control infrastructure by establishing a new division, the legal and compliance department for Europe.

"The establishment of this department will further enhance SMBC's compliance management within the EMEA region," said SMBC in a statement signed by president Takeshi Kunibe.

It is not yet clear who will lead the division, or whether new hires will made for it.
