Three La Jolla investment managers have broken away from Morgan Stanley Smith Barney to launch San Diego, CA-based Ibis Capital, a new wealth management firm.

Ibis Capital will retain 83 client relationships and account for about $300 million in assets under management, according to San Diego Business Journal

The three founding partners include: chief investment officer Neal McNeil; Robert Meyer, director of strategic and financial planning, and Ryan Clive-Smith, director of business development. The group have an aggregate 40 years of financial advisory experience.

McNeil heads the Ibis asset management committee and assumes responsibility for the daily management of client portfolios, the firm said. He started his career at Morgan Stanley in 1997, focusing on high net worth clients trading in derivatives.

Meyer is charged with guiding clients through the written financial planning process, including retirement, estate planning, education and insurance planning. He also serves on the investment committee, assisting in investment research, portfolio construction, and matching asset allocation to the client’s tolerance for risk. Meyer also began his career with Morgan Stanley, in 1998.

Meanwhile, Clive-Smith acts as an advocate for the client throughout the process of meeting and understanding the capabilities of the firm. Clive-Smith also serves as a member of Ibis’s investment committee. He started his career at Prudential Securities.
