(JBI) has opened an office in Newcastle to serve clients in the North East. The announcement comes just days after a rival Swiss bank, UBS, unveiled a new operation in the northeastern English city.

The bank said that while it has had a presence in the North East for over five years, “opening of our new office is a clear signal of our commitment to the region and the UK." Julius has hired relationship managers Aidan Dunstan and Alison Lander, and assistant relationship manager Stacey Kirby, all previously at UBS, to support JBI’s expansion into this market.

They will join Simon Patterson and Chris Shearsmith of JBI’s North East team. Dunstan has more than 33 years of experience in wealth management working with business owners, entrepreneurs and families in the North East. Lander has more than 33 years of experience working in the private banking sector in Newcastle.

Stacey Kirby brings more than 20 years of wealth management and private banking experience supporting high net worth families in the North East.

“Aidan, Alison and Stacey all bring extensive local knowledge and experience of the private banking and wealth management market in the North East. The business has a clear mission to invest across the UK and hire the best talent to provide a market-leading service for our clients. We’re thrilled to have them join and represent the best of wealth management in the UK,” David Durlacher, CEO, Julius Baer International said in a statement.

This new office follows UBS’s recent expansion into the North East, along with a number of other large European banks and wealth managers who are investing in a regional presence. Such moves suggest that, despite the shift towards hybrid working and use of two-way video channels, firms consider they must have a "boots-on-the-ground" presence in the UK regions.
