Mr Boran became a registered representative only recently, having played professional baseball for much of his career. He spent six seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, and the Somerset Patriots of Bridgewater, New Jersey, which he joined during their 2005 championship season.

An increasing number of sporting professionals are finding second careers in wealth management.

Earlier this month, investment management firm GAM, which is owned by Swiss bank Julius Baer, made James Lindsay-Fynn a portfolio manager within its managed portfolios service. Mr Lindsay-Fynn was the 2007 World Rowing Championship gold medallist and represented Great Britain in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the men's lightweight four.

Also in January, Rothschild Private Banking and Trust appointed Gàbor Vass as a private banker at its Zurich office from Coutts. Before joining the latter in 2005, Mr Vass pursued a professional handball career in his native Hungary.

Last Spring, Welsh international rugby player Martyn Williams joined Cardiff-based Castle Court Consulting, while Standard Chartered recruited former Australian cricket captain Greg Chappell as a consultant to the private bank in July.
