More UK citizens are in the inheritance tax firing line and the numbers are likely to rise, putting a premium on robust planning and mitigation strategies, the author of this article argues.
A grim fact of life is that at just the point when relatives grieve for a relative who has just died, they have the chore of dealing with inheritance tax, or estate taxes, as they are called in the US. The rise in property prices in recent years, some of which was encouraged by a decade of almost zero interest rates, means that many people are dragged above the threshold – aka “nil rate band” of IHT, set at £325,000 ($407,603). Such an amount will not buy much property these days: In March, the average price of a UK house was £278,000. Millions of people who might have once dismissed worries about IHT as a concern of “the rich” have found, to their horror, that they are in the firing line. This is extremely stressful given the rising costs of social care for the elderly, and the seemingly unlimited hunger for spending on the UK’s National Health Service.
What sort of tools are available that might mitigate some of the likely impact? To answer that question is Jack Whitford, business development executive at the UK investment firm Triple Point. Each year, a huge number of families are surprised with the level of tax due when they lose a loved one. The Office for Budget Responsibility has found that families could pay £37 billion in inheritance tax over the next five years, 36 per cent more than in 2017 to 2021 (1). In some ways this is expected. Surging property prices have increased the value of family holdings, yet, for over a decade the nil-rate band has been frozen at £325,000 ($407,612).
However, perhaps a more significant reason is that people don’t plan for the worst. Nearly half of Britons over 55 years old don’t have a will (2), and many more fail to seek informed advice on exemptions and relief. If they do plan, they will discover a range of legitimate options to reduce and even nullify their IHT liability.
One established estate planning option is investments that quality for Business Relief (BR). BR has been part of inheritance tax legislation since 1976; it can enable clients to obtain IHT relief faster than trusts or gifts and, most importantly, can be done without a loss of control for the investor over their investment. With a BR-qualifying investment, the shares become 100 per cent inheritance tax exempt after a holding period of two years, as long as the shares are still held at the time of death.
Given that inflation is set to reach a 30-year high (3), another advantage of BR qualifying investments is that they can provide reliable returns and capital growth. BR is typically available for: shares in an unquoted qualifying company; shares in a qualifying company listed on the alternative investment Market (AIM); and an unincorporated qualifying trading business; or an interest in one, such as a partnership. As with all investments, there are risks; the value of an investment can rise and fall, and clients can get back less than they invest. However, there are basic ways to mitigate risks. One method is focusing on diversification – a fundamental tool in financial planning.
Diversification in BR
A balanced spread of investments across asset types and sectors is a smart way of protecting against volatile peaks and troughs and will help to target sustainable returns. It is a fundamental component of financial planning. Within BR, diversification is also a vital way of building a balanced investment portfolio that limits exposure to one single asset.

Managing a diverse debt financing book with about £750 million of AuM, Triple Point provided £285 million of financing to UK-based organisations to March 2021, including £125 million of CBILS loans to those SMEs in communities across the UK most impacted by the pandemic. It is important that ESG risks and opportunities are taken into account to manage any associated risk to clients' money. Over the next few years, it is clear that more clients will be faced with larger IHT bills. If they plan today, they will find a range of options to reduce and even nullify their IHT liability.
