UK Philanthropy Website Announces Board, Opens to Donors

The Big Give, a new website that enables major donors to find high level charity projects in their field of interest, has unveiled its “board of philanthropists”. The board comprises twenty-two individuals from the private, public and charitable sectors. Their role will be to encourage other major donors to give intelligently and to provide expert feedback on the website. The site is the brainchild of Alec Reed, founder of Reed Specialist Recruitment and the Reed Foundation. Members include politician Lord Salisbury, Lord Joffe, chair of the UK Government's Giving Campaign and Simon Murdoch, who launched Amazon in the UK. The website encourages high net worth philanthropists to identify suitable projects and gives charities the opportunity to attract funding of up to £10 million ($19.5 million). Donors looking to give £100,000 or more can search quickly and discreetly for charitable projects in their field of interest, filtering their options by donation amount, geographical location, cause and type of beneficiary. Launched to charities in October 2007, the website is already advertising over £1 billion worth of projects.
