UK’s Baillie Gifford Adds To Manager Roster

Baillie Gifford, the Edinburgh-based investment partnership, has appointed Tom Walsh as deputy manager for the Monks Investment Trust, a vehicle overseen by the firm.

Before joining Baillie Gifford as an investment manager in the UK equity team in 2009, Walsh held positions at Merrill Lynch as a pan-European analyst and at Fidelity International within fund management, as well as qualifying as an associate chartered accountant while at Deloitte and Touche.

In his new role, Walsh will work alongside Gerald Smith – the Monks Investment Trust manager – to select investments and assist with shareholder communication.

"The Monks Investment Trust invests internationally in order to achieve capital growth, which takes priority over income and dividends," the firm said in a statement.

In other recent developments, earlier this month Baillie Gifford appointed three new partners with effect from 1 May 2013. The new partners are Spencer Adair, investment manager in the global alpha team, Kathrin Hamilton, director in the clients department responsible for North American clients, and Graham Laybourn, director of legal and regulatory risk.

The firm will have a total of 39 partners from 1 May and had around £85 billion (about $130 billion) under management and advice at the end of 2012.
