Romney Tops Wealthy Presidential Candidates List

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is the wealthiest US presidential candidate since Ross Perot and Steve Forbes, a report by the global intelligence firm Wealth-X shows. 

Romney is one of the 3,140 richest inviduals in the US with an estimated net worth of $250 million. Ross Perot remains the richest candidate ever with $3.58 billion, while Forbes recorded net assets of $450 million. 

Trailing Romney on the list of wealthy candidates is John Kerry, with $240 million, Al Gore with $100 million, Bill Clinton with $85 million, Hillary Clinton with $85 million, Jon Huntsman with $70 million, and Rudy Giuliani with $65 million. Other well-heeled candidates include John Edwards, who records a net worth of $45 million; John McCain, with $40 million; Gary Johnson, $30 million; and George HW Bush, with $30 million. 

"There's a lot of attention on the wealth of these presidential candidates as the race heats up. Romney's among the 0.001 per cent in the US with a net worth of at least $250 million," said David Friedman, co-founder and executive vice president at Wealth-X.

Wealth-X's World Ultra Wealth Report 2011, estimates that there are 57,860 ultra high net worth individuals in the US. The report defines an ultra-wealthy individual as anyone with a minimum net worth of $30 million when accounting for shares in public and private companies, residential and investment properties, art collections, planes, cash and other investible assets.
