Mirabaud-Backed Swiss Sailor Breaks New Record

Swiss sailor Dominique Wavre has sailed around Latin America’s famously challenging Cape Horn for the ninth time, doing so on "Mirabaud", the yacht which takes its name from the Geneva-based firm by which he is sponsored.

Mirabaud has sponsored Wavre in both the Barcelona world race of 2010 – a double-handed round-the-world race - and the Transat Jacques Vabre race in 2011.

While a landlocked nation, Switzerland and its banks are no strangers to support for ocean racing and yachting, seeing it as a way to highlight brands and associate with adventurous or prestigious events. For example, UBS has been involved in racing for several years; Sir Ben Ainslie, the UK’s most famous contemporary yachtsman and multiple gold medal winner was sponsored for his 2012 Olympic challenges by JP Morgan Asset Management, part of JP Morgan.

Having set sail on 10 November last year from Les Sables d’Olonne, France, to race his fourth Vendée Globe solo round the world race, Wavre confirmed the new record when he rounded Cape Horn. He is currently in seventh place, just 300 nautical miles behind fifth placed Jean Le Cam with 7,000 miles to go to the finish.

“What Dominique has accomplished since the start of the Vendée Globe and for that matter since the beginning of his career is absolutely amazing. We are very proud to be associated with such an impressive sailing record and with a sailor that demonstrates such exceptional human qualities,” said Antonio Palma, Mirabaud & Cie Private Bank partner and chief executive officer, and sponsor of the project.

Wavre first rounded the legendary spot at the southernmost tip of Latin America in 1981 during the Whitbread round the world race. He went on to race in the next three events. He rounded Cape Horn again in 2000 and 2004 during the Vendée Globe, and then in 2007 and 2010 during the Barcelona World Race.

In addition to sailing, Mirabaud’s support and sponsorship of various endeavours includes classical music, literature and the arts, and film.
