- January 12, 2009 - Organisation Insight: Barclays Wealth
Kicking off a new series taking an in-depth look at the institutions which define the global wealth management marketplace, WealthBriefing takes the lid off Barclays Wealth. The
UK based global titan's bold and uncompromising approach sometimes ruffles feathers amongst other market participants, but will this hold it back in its ambition to be held in the same regard as its sister organisation Barclays Capital?
It is hard to avoid its name these days.
Barclays Wealth is the
UK’s biggest wealth manager and has come a long way since it was formed in 2006 as the wealth arm of th.

This week Coutts launches "Courtesy of Coutts", a new points scheme linked to its Gold Card and exclusive World Card. The scheme enables clients to collect one point for each £1 spent, with which they can buy either travel with ebookers or easyJet, or choose to donate to one of three selected charities – the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, the Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity or the Woodland Trust. The launch sees Coutts withdrawing from the Air Miles programme.
- May 17, 2007 - Is Word of Mouth The Best Means of Private Client Acquisition?
When WealthBriefing posed the question in its weekly poll “What is the most effective way of private client acquisition?”, “word of mouth from existing customers” was voted the most effective tool by more than half of respondents (56 per cent).
A “direct approach” (21 per cent) and “referrals from other advisors” (16 per cent) were in second and third place. Trailing in fourth place with just 4 per cent of the vote were “marketing initiatives”.
- May 14, 2007 - Concierge Services Increase “After Dinner Advocacy" Amongst Wealth Management Clients
In the past decade there has been an explosion of concierge services set up to cater for increasingly time-poor individuals. Whilst jokes have long abounded about private bankers dog-walking and obtaining tickets for Wimbledon, “lifestyle management” services are increasingly being used by wealth management firms to enhance their offering to clients.
Alison Langton, head of product marketing for Coutts, which offers a concierge service as part of their Coutts World premier charge card, says:

- March 29, 2007 - A New Dawn in Wealth Management Advertising?
Flicking through the pages of Tatler, the thought provoking ads for Barclays Wealth with the strap line, "Wealth, what’s it to you?" do not look out of place amidst the glossy advertisements for Chanel, Boodles and Hermes. Ads for other private banks, however, are notable in their absence.
Private banks and wealth managers have not traditionally been recognised for their advertising campaigns and perhaps this is not surprising in an industry which targets a relatively niche audience.
- March 2, 2007 - Private Banks Look to Sponsorship
Sponsorship is used by many companies to raise their profile, but choosing just the right partner and product to augment an image is important.
Private banks and financial institutions sponsor everything from sports events to orchestras, writing prizes to finance courses, and most of the time it is an effective alternative to advertising.
For example, UK private bank Duncan Lawrie sponsors the Crime Writers’ Association Dagger Prize for crime fiction, which is now known as the Duncan Lawrie Dagger, and the Duncan Lawrie International Dagger for the best translated work.
- January 9, 2007 - Barclays Wealth to Sponsor Major UK Orchestra
Barclays Wealth has agreed to sponsor the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to the tune of £30,000 per year for the next three years.
The funding will be used to support the CBSO's national and international touring programme and to enable the CBSO to realise their strategy of expanding their repertoire, educating young musicians and reaching more people through increased performances and recordings.
According to Barclays Wealth, the sponsorship demonstrates its commitment to the Midlands as it continues to expand its UK regional presence.

Wealthy women value the “personal touch” from financial institutions much more than men, according to new research.
Barclays Wealth, the newly-branded private banking division of Barclays, found that women look more for guidance and detailed advice from a trusted and tailored source than their male counterparts, and with women already forming around 46 per cent of Britain’s 376,000 millionaires, they are a key focus for wealth management businesses.
Just 19 per cent of women interviewed by Barclays for the survey, said they felt they had a comprehensive understanding of investment produc.
