City Banker Gets On His Bike For Epic Charity Ride
We all like to do our bit for good causes, but the charitable efforts of one City banker in particular have filled GoldFinger with awe.
Twenty seven year old Jon Wright has given up his job as a private banker at Barclays Wealth to cycle along the Tropic of Cancer in aid of cancer charities Macmillan, Orchid, Starlight and the Willow Foundation, and to raise awareness. It is hoped that over £100,000 will be raised.
This epic 11,000-mile journey through Europe, Africa, Asia and Central America is being sponsored by Plurimi Capital, the London-based wealth management firm which specialises in advising ultra high net worth individuals and institutional clients.
The Plurimi Capital Tropic of Cancer for Cancer Challenge commenced on 9 October when Mr Wright, accompanied by his brother Dom, set out from the Bank of England. Over the course of the challenge this intrepid pair will cycle a mammoth 50 miles a day for nine months and they are scheduled to arrive at Havana, Cuba in time for next year’s summer solstice – 21 June – to symbolise the long life that can be lived after a cancer diagnosis.
The background to Mr Wright’s efforts is particularly inspiring, he himself having suffered two separate bouts of testicular cancer and by the fact he was only a novice cyclist before starting training for the challenge a year ago.
“I wanted to plan a large scale challenge to match the big effect that cancer has had on my life. The first time was not easy but I confronted it and got on with it. The second time was a rare occurrence as it was unrelated, that hit me extremely hard and prompted me to create something positive from my experience,” Mr Wright said.
“We are very proud to support Jon and Dom on this challenge. Testicular cancer can cause devastating effects if not detected and treated in its early stages. On behalf of Plurimi Capital, we wish the boys all the best for this extremely worthy cause,” said Ramzy Rasamny, the firm's chief executive.
