Julius Baer said data about wealthy clients has been stolen from its office on the Cayman Islands. The theft was reported in the Swiss business weekly Cash, and was confirmed by a spokesman from the Zurich-based bank to Dow Jones. According to Cash, the records of the clients’ accounts were posted anonymously to its editor earlier this week. A spokesman for Baer told the Swiss press that there had been no technical problems with security which had led to the files being stolen. “A former employee is probably responsible. No enterprise can exclude such a theft happening with even the most modern infrastructure and safety precautions,” the spokesman said. The incident is now a matter for a police investigation, he said, adding the bank would do everything possible to get the data back as soon as possible.
