INTERVIEW: Following Convictions To Bring Home The Investment Bacon
April 29, 2013
When investors pay an active fund manager to hold a “high-conviction” set of stocks, the concentration of equity choices cannot come much more pronounced than at the fund management firm of Polen Capital Management, a Florida-based business. This is very much a “bottom-up”, stock-picking house that adopts the “value” model of investing. And to signify the level of conviction at play, the firm has only owned about 100 issuers’ equities in the past 25 years of Polen Capital’s life - a turnover of about four names a year.

Investment View: Collins Stewart WM Takes Cautious Stance, Shy Of Equities
March 13, 2013
There have been enough “false dawns” in the investment world in the past few years for any wealth manager to use strong market periods as an opportunity to grab profits and shelter from financial squalls. And that seems to be the approach of Collins Stewart Wealth Management these days. On a theoretical balanced portfolio at CSWM, where the asset allocation is typically 60 per cent equities, 40 per cent bonds, the portfolio is currently 49 per cent equities, 35 per cent fixed income, 9 per cent “other” (alternatives, etc) and the remainder in cash.

Six Unloved Emerging Markets That Might Win Friends This Year
January 21, 2013
Six emerging market countries – Russia, India, Nigeria, Argentina, Venezuela and Cyprus - are unloved to varying degrees but their governments’ debt might suddenly become more attractive if certain developments occur, an investment house says. All these countries are under a shadow of some kind: fears about political corruption and lack of reform; wrangles over debt repayments; territorial conflicts; far-leftist regimes and or fears about a hard-line regime, noted Adelante Asset Management in a recent briefing for journalists. Stronger Chinese growth in 2013, a slowing in the headwinds buffeting the eurozone and an uptick in US homebuilder sentiment boded well in general for the global economy - and emerging markets - this year, the firm said.

Aftermath Of Obama Win Spells Good Cheer For Select Sectors: Smith & Williamson
November 16, 2012
In the aftermath of the recent re-election of Barack Obama, managers at the Smith & Williamson North America Trust are keen on sectors such as house-builders, banks, pharmaceuticals and select energy sectors, as they consider all these areas should be strong performers over certain time horizons. After some uncertainty about the outcome of the polls, the decisive result for Obama – albeit having to deal with a Republican-controlled House of Representatives – should be generally positive for equities in the near term and further out, Robert Royle, co-manager, told journalists in a briefing about the firm’s post-election thoughts. He spoke alongside co-manager Tana Focke.

July 20, 2012
Editor’s note: Roberto Cominotto, a fund manager of the JB Energy Transition Fund at Swiss & Global Asset Management, has these comments to make on what he calls a “golden age for natural gas”, a view driven in part by significant developments in the US. The issue is also politically sensitive given the forthcoming US presidential elections in November. Energy policies are high on the agenda for the US elections in November, and natural gas is a hotly-debated topic.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Tenax Hunts Gems Among Europe's Unloved Credit Markets
July 4, 2012
It is a familiar complaint: a company has great products and plenty of assets but banks don’t want to provide it with credit. And yet, as is regularly remarked, some institutions and large corporations are sitting on piles of cash and reluctant to spend while the economic outlook is so uncertain. But eventually, if there is a mismatch of supply and demand for cash, then deals can be done.
